On Squam Lake in Tuftonboro, New Hampshire — the lake the world knows as On Golden Pond — something remarkable happened one summer that scientists stopped to document.

Two loon couples had made their homes on the lake, each raising two chicks on the floating nests built for them by the wildlife scientists who watch over these endangered birds. But in one nest, the larger chick refused to share. The smaller baby, hungry and determined, did something extraordinary: it left. It paddled alone, a full mile along the shoreline, until it found the other loon family — the couple in this painting. And they took it in. The scientists watched as that adoptive pair made certain every chick at the nest was fed equally, every single time.
