Some places hold a particular kind of quiet — the kind that settles over a lake at dawn, when the mist is still low and the only sound is the trembling call of a loon somewhere out on the water.

Welcome to the Lake is an original painting by artist Evelyn Taylor, inspired by a true story witnessed on Squam Lake in Tuftonboro, New Hampshire — the lake the world knows as On Golden Pond. There, wildlife scientists watch over endangered loons, building floating nests and documenting each family through the season. One summer, a baby loon — crowded out by a larger sibling — paddled a full mile along the shoreline alone, until it found another loon family. They adopted it. And the scientists documented that the adoptive pair made certain every chick was fed equally, every time.
